Rev. Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth (December 25, 1810 – October 6, 1895) is considered the father of American beekeeping. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he showed a very early interest in observing the behavior of insects. He took up beekeeping, in part, to help with severe bouts of depression. He is credited with the discovery of “bee space”, the concept that a distance of 3/8 inch between internal parts of a beehive will allow the bees to move around without building excess burr comb. This space directly lead to successful movable frames and the design of the modern bee hive. His design for a bee hive, known as the “Langstroth hive”, is now the most widely used design for managed beehives and is used throughout the world. In 1853, Langstroth published The Hive and the Honey-Bee, a comprehensive book on the practical aspects of managing honey bees. This book is still published today and is considered a “must read” for anyone seriously interested in beekeeping.
