Video on Managing Small Hive Beetles

Here is a very good video by Jamie Ellis, University of Florida, on just about everything you need to know about managing infestations of the Small Hive Beetle.  These hive pests are in Michigan and you should be on the look out for them.

I am new at beekeeping and I’ve started my first two hives. How big of a problem are the small hive beetles in Michigan? thanks

    Carl,
In my experience, the small hive beetle is not a major problem in Michigan. I have seen some in my hives (I suspect that they hitchhiked in on a spring package), but it was a rare event. There are a lot more things to be concerned about (like good management, nosema and – of course – the mites). If you have not already done so, I would suggest you seek out a local bee club and start attending. This is a great place to network, keep up on what is going on in the apiary, and get information.
