MBA Members Can Get Discount on Mite Check Kits

The following communication has been sent to the MBA by Meghan Milbrath, Coordinator of the Michigan Pollinator Inititave

Hello beekeepers and citizen scientists!

Michigan Beekeepers Association is partnering with MSU and the mite check project to bring you mite check kits at half off (normally $20, now yours for $10).  [Editor’s Note:  see below for details of the MBA member discount.]

As we are winding down the season, there is one last chance to check mite levels in your colonies, and to help us understand what is going on with varroa.

What you can do:

1)  Purchase a mite check kit (or use your own).  Mite check kits are available in the following locations:
At the MBA fall meeting October 23 and 24 – honeybee extension specialist Walt Pett will be explaining and selling kits.
The MSU bookstore online – shop.msu.edu – Product Code: BULLETIN-E3253.
Napoleon Bee Supply
BuggsNest West – Phone: 269-743-8146 Email: trreech@aol.com
Mann Lake – Product Code: DC-100 (no discount here)

2) Test your mites using the sugar roll method – http://www.ent.uga.edu/bees/disorders/documents/VarroaMites_155.pdf

Sign up for the mite check program mailing list – sign up here: https://pollinators.msu.edu/mite-check/.

You will need to sign up to get reports and future surveys.

3) Send us your results – http://survey.beeinformed.org/mitecheck-survey/

We’ll send you a report of mites in your area, and we will use the data to get a better picture of mite levels and what is being done to combat them.

October Mite Check Challenge!
MSU and Mite Check is challenging all beekeepers to check and report their Varroa mite levels between October 14th and October 28th. We are seeing unusually high levels of mite infestations in colonies this year. While an increase in mite levels observed using the powdered sugar roll test is expected in the fall due to decreased brood in the colony, we are trying to determine what these levels mean for the health and survival of honey bee colonies.

Editor’s Addition:
As noted above, the MBA has purchased 100 kits that are available to MBA members in good standing at $10 each.  This is a 50% discount off of the regular price of $20.  This discount is available for only 100 kits; so don’t delay your purchase.  We expect the 100 to go quickly.

So what is a “member in good standing”?  This is a current member of the MBA whose dues is payable up through 2015 or beyond (many members have already renewed their membership for 2016). Click here to check your membership status.

An email is being sent to current MBA members with instructions on how to obtain the discount for the mite check kit.  Not a member?  You can become on by clicking here.
